Bangladesh’s interim government is making extensive preparations to ensure a free, fair and peaceful general election in the first half of February, said Principal Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
The chief advisor made this statement during a meeting with Sergio Gore, US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia and US Ambassador to India, in New York on Monday (September 22) local time.
He said the election will be held in February next year . The elections will be free, fair and peaceful. The country is fully prepared for this.”
During the meeting, Sergio Gore lauded the Chief Advisor’s leadership and emphasized the United States’ ongoing commitment to supporting Bangladesh
During the meeting, both sides discussed various bilateral and regional issues, including trade, South Asian regional cooperation, SAARC revival, the Rohingya crisis, and the spread of misinformation targeting Dhaka.
The chief adviser sought continued U.S. support for the more than one million Rohingya refugees in camps in Cox’s Bazar. In response, U.S. officials said their life-saving assistance to the Rohingya would continue.
Dr. Yunus said, “The interim government has intensified efforts to revive SAARC.”
He expressed Bangladesh’s interest in joining ASEAN, saying, “Integration with the economies of Southeast Asia can significantly accelerate the country’s development.” He also stressed the importance of strengthening economic ties with landlocked Nepal and Bhutan, as well as the seven northeastern states of India.
